I’m so excited to be sharing a custom creative concept session I did with this couple and their dog. This family is artistic and fun and I knew we needed to capture their essence perfectly.

Modern + Minimalist Family Session in Noguchi Garden

This was the second time I was capturing this fur-mily. The woman is a talented family and pet photographer, so we brainstormed ways to incorporate her appreciation of both pets and art into their custom creative concept session. I suggested the Noguchi Garden in Costa Mesa, Orange County – a place they frequent and walk through often! 

Planning the vibe

From there, we considered the overall vibe we were going for. The idea for the session was modern and minimalist art – but with a playful spin. I created an inspiration board for this session that included images of the architecture and various compositions of the lighting. I started to think how we could incorporate this couple in a seamless way and the idea came to me. Instead of merely appreciating the art at Noguchi Garden, the couple was going to be part of the art itself! This idea perfectly encapsulated this family’s interests and passions, while also incorporating their playful spirit! 

Styling

We used the unique architecture to plan the outfits and make them part of the art. There are a lot of angles, triangles, and other shapes at the Noguchi Garden that we knew would be important to incorporate into styling if they were to become part of the art. We chose minimalist outfits in black and brown to stand out in the neutral landscape, incorporating  straight-across black overalls and a brown fedora hat.

Become Part of the Art

The key component to making this concept come together was for this family to become part of the art! I shot from a variety of angles and distances to create pieces that look like they could hang from an art museum. We took advantage of the sharp angles casted by shadows and light to continue making art in this modern and minimalist space. The couple ran across the iconic reflective triangle, showing the perfect balance of energy and reflection – a master blend of simple and complex. It was a beautiful intertwining that represented the concept of the Noguchi Gardens and why many people, like this couple, like to walk through it. It’s the perfect place to experience tranquility, and life at the same time.
