Are you expecting? Congratulations!! I love documenting the beautiful journey pregnant moms are on. When I shoot maternity sessions, my goal is to create more than just beautiful portraits of you. But images that remind you of how special and exciting this time is in your life, how empowered and beautiful you can feel, and capturing the love and joy that is the foundation of your growing family. If you have kids, then your connection with the kids (and the kids with their sibling-to- be) and exploring nature together will of course play a big role in your session. I take only a few photos of everyone looking at the camera, your gallery will be more storytelling and emotive in nature.
I often get asked when to inquire with me, or when to start planning so here is how I plan my maternity sessions and what to expect as your Orange County maternity photographer.
Best Time for Your Maternity Session
I recommend your shoot to be when you are between 28-34 weeks along. This is the best time as your belly is visible and round, but you are not too uncomfortable to move or walk around. I want you to feel your absolute best for your session!
I also recommend inquiring with me about your maternity session at least a few months in advance as I am usually booked out that far.
I usually will shoot at sunset, but it will depend on if we’re at the beach or not, time of year, high/low tides, and the ages/how many of your family members. I provide you with a variety of locations to choose from that I have personally scouted and shot at before. Outdoor locations can range from the beach, to downtown Los Angeles, to grasslands and hills - lots of options to choose from. You can also choose to do an intimate indoor maternity photoshoot as well whether that be in your home or in my in-home creative studio in the South Bay Los Angeles area.
Once we lock in a time and location, we will work on styling together! I recommend first looking at the colors of the location we will be in and pair with colors that compliment it well. Another consideration is the style you are going for. Some women love to be barefoot with some unbuttoned denim jeans and a white bralette while others prefer the gorgeous two piece sets that show off your belly and flow in the wind! I have a client closet filled with beautiful, hand selected dresses of all sizes that can accommodate you. The pieces allow us to highlight (and show off!) your bump as I photograph the beautiful texture and movement. I recommend showing off your bare bump in at least a few pictures. You are welcome to include your significant other, and have 2 outfits for your maternity session.
Family Maternity Sessions
One of my most asked questions is if I shoot maternity sessions with the other family members. Absolutely! The focus here is primarily on documenting family interactions and capturing your love during this special season you’re in. I will also take some solo shots of you and highlight your bump. This is perfect for the family who wants some updated family pictures, but also wants to highlight this special time as you keep growing your family.
Single or Couples Maternity Sessions
If this is your first pregnancy, or you are only including you and/or your partner, the focus will be all on you! However, I photograph you as natural as possible as you take in these precious moments, enjoy the setting, and interact with your little one in the womb - and/or with your significant other. We will explore together, have fun and soak in some quiet moments before you get to meet your baby!
I document moms-to-be all over southern California ranging from Morro Bay all the way to San Diego. If you are located in southern California, I would love to be your Los Angeles and Orange County maternity photographer! You can inquire with me here.
